Author Profile B D DeVault

Barbara Dean DeVault (1939–2019), who wrote under the name B. D. DeVault, was an American author whose work spanned heartfelt small-town fiction, short stories, and imaginative children’s books. A lifelong lover of books and storytelling, she owned and operated the independent bookstore Booktrees & Etc. for 17 years, creating a welcoming space for readers of all ages in her Oklahoma community.

Barbara also created the charming “Kittydid & Tad” children’s series, including Kittydid and Tad in “A Cat Such as I,” A Cat in the Dell, and Kittydid & Tad in “Hail to the Chief.” These stories reflect her joy in writing for young readers and her belief that kindness, courage, and curiosity matter at any age.

Barbara was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and her family, faith, and community deeply shaped the worlds and characters she created. Today, her books continue to find new readers who connect with her warm, human storytelling and the quiet strength at the heart of her characters.
